You can use the interactive process not only to ensure an accommodation under the ADA/ADAAA is properly managed, but also to evaluate your process and fine-tune it going forward.

  1. Schedule regular check-ins with employees receiving accommodations, when this is appropriate.
  2. Analyze your accommodation data to find opportunities for improvement in the interactive process and mitigate the need for requests for accommodation. For starters, you want to identify:
    • Any recurring patterns related to workplace location, shift schedules, etc.
    • If any lags are in the accommodation process and if so, where they’re occurring
    • Any types of accommodations that escalate to needing additional management
