What to Do Right Now to Comply with the ADA/ADAAA

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) offers a template for writing a company ADA/ADAAA policy.

A successful and effective ADA/ADAAA interactive process starts with maintaining accurate and up-to-date job descriptions for your entire organization. The list should include the essential functions of each job, as well as for each job in each position.

To ensure that qualifying employees receive “effective and reasonable accommodations,” you need to:

  1. Determine essential job functions for every position and include them in the job descriptions.
  2. Train your managers to recognize accommodation requests, and how to respond when they receive a request.
  3. Implement an accommodations solution or process that helps you track and manage accommodation requests consistently across your team.
  4. Make workplace changes that will minimize the need for requests for reasonable accommodations and maximize employee productivity, morale, and engagement.
